Choosing the right windows and doors for your new home should be more than just one more mundane detail to be finished before dinner. Think back to when you were looking for the perfect home plans. What was the focal point of the design on which you finally decided? More than likely, that focal point was the front door.

Among the various other reasons that the home plan was selected was the welcoming feeling that radiated from that first sketch. It is important to put that feeling of openness into reality by choosing the perfect front door for your new home.

The number of house plans that you perused before making a selection is probably near to the number of doors available on the market today. So you probably want to do your homework prior to shopping for the door. First on the list of concerns for many people is security and safety.

Security features include the ability to place additional locks, and the reduction in the amount of glass compared to doors of the past. Also, there has been a push from consumers for manufacturers to begin making steel doors with the look of wood. Steel doors no longer look like they should be on your garage. You should look at homes of similar style in your neighborhood to see what is commonly used. However, do not limit yourself! Look at the front covers of home magazines as you are waiting in line that the grocery store, and look for photos online.

After reviewing the style of doors available, it is time to take your ideas and go shopping! You should visit the major home centers, your local hardware dealers and maybe even a specialty store dealing in doors and windows.

As in the search for your perfect home plan, you will be more prepared to shop for a new front door if you have been able to significantly reduce the amount of time required to select the perfect front door.

Depending on the style of your house, there are many styles of doors available. Double doors, pocket doors, doors with stained glass inserts and even replications of vintage doors crowd the door sections of most large home centers.

Whatever the choice, be sure that it provides that warm welcome to your friends and family. The front door is one of the first impressions made on your guests, and it should be unique and inviting. Most importantly, do not overlook the importance of this decision. Your front door will be the first thing you see upon returning home for many years to come.
